Dance of life through expressions

April 25, 2016

So one lousy evening, post returning home from work  - my housemate and I were surfing through YouTube. I ran across a mujra number of the very versatile Rekha. Yes, the epitome of intricate beauty, that face which makes one glued towards it. The era of "mujra" - that one dance form where expressions mattered the most, the delicate movement of eyes which speaks volume without spoken words. It left me awestruck as to how beautifully could one express their love, hatred, desperation, long wait through this dance form.

We also have the magnificient Meena Kumari, the elaborate Madhubala (her eyes kill me instantly), Madhuri Dixit with her heart wrenching performance through "Maar Dala". There's a mysterios pattern which they followed through the dance which evolved into a masterpiece.

Let's read this in detail. The stance, the posture, the hand movements, the slight shift of the lips to the exquisite and extravagant mujra attitre- everything about this dance form and the era of legendary actresses and divas who have been constantly applauded for their performances- makes it even more thought of. The exuberant and extraordinare use of jewellery, the bright elegant costumes, the face make-up, the usage of color red- all these make the performance form even more eye pleasing alongwith the dance through expressions. Yes, I cannot stop "wow"ing over the expressive eyes, expressive hand moves, the floor art and also, the words murmered while performing with a little lip movement. All of these make this a treat to the eyes.

I've never had an experience where I did not get goosebumps while watching Rekha or Madhuri perform on the mujra. They're true beauties which took this form of dance a level up and made it difficult for other actresses to compete. I reckon performances like those, the utterances, the bold articulation, the communication through body language is the most Indian cinema could've achieved in the Golden Era. Even though when we have beautiful actresses today with pretty faces; the entire concept of "dance through expressions" goes missing at most places.

Signing off with a sigh of the lost times with the beautiful divas. Keep dancing, keep living through this beautiful art & smile!

Love,
Vinita
